Cable Car History
| 1927 | Cable car starts operating |
| 1944 | Operation is suspended during World War II |
| 1949 | Cable car reopens |
| 1968 | Large compartments are introduced |
The cable car started operating in 1929. Although it was temporarily closed down during World War II, it reopened four years after the war, in 1949.
After undergoing renovations in 1968, it was reborn as a fully automatically controlled modern cable car. Ever since, it has become the main means of transportation for the large number of visitors to Mt. Takao.
At an inclination of 31.18 degrees at the steepest point, the cable car boasts the steepest incline of any cable car system in Japan, and it offers riders an awe-inspiring view through the windows.
The cable car system is designed for maximum safety, and it uses a rope with a safety factor greater than 10 times. Even in the unlikely event that the rope should break, the system is equipped with powerful automatic brakes that will grip the rails and bring the car to a stop after sliding a distance of less than two meters.
